Let’s face it sometimes it is hard to let go of our favourite comfy specs, but they do get to a stage (after a couple of year) where they are beyond repair! We all know a family member or a close friend that has those pair of glasses, you know the one’s were the lenses are all scratched and the nosepads are discoloured, sorry if I am turning your stomach but it is the harsh truth! It is time for them to let go and get a new pair of comfy specs. To do this you need to try one or all of the following:

Try dropping subtle hints like “your glasses are so old fashioned! LOL!!”

Send them a link to glasses that you think will suit them

Tell them you need new glasses and would like advice, then get them to try on the specs while in the opticians!

Ask them if you can “try on” their glasses and accidentally break them and say “they were so old they just fell apart in my hands!”

If all else fails bluntly tell them that they badly need to get new glasses!

Everywhere you look now a celebrity is wearing specs of some sort, don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great but sometimes they can really get it wrong.

Anne Hathaway has to be one of the worst offenders. I know she loves to wear her specs out in public in places some other celebs wouldn’t dare. God love her I sometimes wonder does she look in the mirror before she leaves the house!

Take a look at the pic, the specs are really nice but her eyebrows are far too heavy to carry off the look she is trying to achieve. All I can see is eyebrows, sorry Anne.

Anne is not the only guilty celeb specs offender. What celebs annoy you with their ridiculous glasses wearing?

Lets face it some people detest wearing specs but a lot of you love it too! It is a little know fact that people wear glasses when going for a job interview as it makes them look more intelligent and employers have a tendency to hire interviewees who wear glasses!! More and more people are wearing glasses today as a result of video games or playing games on a hand held device. There is also the people who wear glasses because it is trendy to do so like Kayne West, Matt Cardle and Natalie Imbruglia to name a few. So if you have to wear glasses or not have a little fun with them and be different!

Sore Eyes? Don't worry!

Every once in a while you are bound to get some sort of eye condition. They are more common than you might think! Here is the top five.

1. Redness: Red eye can be caused by an infection, an allergy such as hayfever, and irritation such as smoke or dust, it can be any number of things really! If the eye is infected there will more than likely be a discharge. See your doctor or optician for treatment.
2. Floaters: So many people have floaters on a constant basis which are harmless. These are most commonly described as specks that float across your vision. A sudden increase in floaters and/or flashing lights may indicate a retinal tear or detachment if this happens to you seek medical attention immediately.
3. Soreness: Conjunctivitis (also known as Pinkeye) is the most common cause of eye soreness. It is an inflammation of the white of the eye. A crust can form on the eye while sleeping so it may be difficult to open in the morning. Bath the eye in warm salty water along with eye drops to clear it up. Consult your doctor or optician if the symptoms persist.
4. Fogginess: This can be a sign of Glaucoma which is damage to the optic nerve from too much pressure in the eye. Once detected, it can be treated, preventing further damage and loss of sight. A regular eye check will detect any changes!
5. Cloudiness: This usually indicates Cataracts. The only cure for this is surgery to have them removed. They are very common among the elderly, smoking can also increase the risk of getting them.

If you have any of the above conditions please consult your doctor or optician before self treatment!

Vision is the dominant sense in most sports. We must maximise all aspects of vision to maximise performance. Wearing glasses or contact lenses can help hugely in your sports performance, they will:

Increase your reaction time

Improve your co-ordination skills

Help you to better judge distances, direction and speed of moving objects

Improve your timing and anticipation skills

Increase your peripheral awareness

Improve eye-to-hand and eye-to-body accuracy

Obviously for certain sports glasses can not be worn but that is where contact lenses come in! We have a large range of glasses for sports and also a large range of contact lenses. Don’t let yourself or your team down by not wearing your specs or contacts, it could be the difference between winning and loosing!

So what’s new in the world of eyes, well nothings new but something old, in fact ancient is now getting a second wind, namely Iridology.

A bit of a mouthful I hear you say! Iridology is the study, analysis and examination of the iris (that’s the coloured part of your eye).

The human iris provides a unique window into our bodies, containing clues to our past , present and future health. The iris is composed ofstructures, fibres and pigmentation that reflects information about ones physical and psychological make-up.

It identifies inherited characteristics, which show how our bodies react to our environment and what symptoms are most likely to occur. Each Iris is very unique to each individual. Among the five billion human inhabitants on Earth, not one has irides identical to yours. It is estimated that some 200 differentiating signs may be charted in the average iris and iris identification is becoming more prevalent as a security device. Your irides offer approx ten times greater security of identification than your fingerprints.

Iridology is now well established as a complementary health discipline in many countries.

When we go on holidays, amongst the 40 pairs of shoes and 20 dresses, should be your back up pair of glasses! I would safely say half the people that go on holidays each year break their specs and don’t have a back up pair with them ! They then have to go to the nearest optician and buy a new pair of specs which is an expense that can be done without while on your hols! Our frames start at just €49 and lenses at €45 so you really don’t have an excuse not to have a spare pair of specs!

Don’t be a fool and get stuck with a pair of sellotaped specs (imagine the photos) on your holidays because you can’t afford to fork out for a new pair.Get yourself sorted with a fab pair of specs today!

Okay, so the New Year is here (Happy New Year by the way!) and we all know we make New Year resolutions that sometimes are impossible to keep. One that is possible to keep is getting your eyes tested. You really need to have a sight test once every 2 years especially if you work in an office environment where you are looking at a computer screen all day. You can get it done for free using your PRSI or Medical Card, so you really don’t have any excuse! Pop into us and fill out the medical card form or call us (098 26732) or email us (info@eyeworld.ie) with your PPS number and we will do the work for you. So if you make no other new year resolutions than to get your eyes tested then you know you’ll be able to keep that one.

Not quite sure what make-up to wear when you are wearing your glasses? Sometimes its difficult to know how to apply your make-up or what areas to concentrate on, so I have taken the hard work out of it for you. Just follow these ten easy steps to complete your tantalizing look!

Start with a cleansed and moisturised face, this is essential

Concealer is a must to cover those dark circles under your eyes as your frames will always cast a shadow there

Use a mineral foundation as it is less oily and stays on longer so you won’t have to touch up so often.

Define your eyebrows into an arched shape with an eyebrow pencil as this will look best with any frame. Then set in place with a clear mascara

For longer lasting colour on your eyes start off with a cream based eye shadow. Apply the lightest colour to the ball of your eye and the deeper colour to the crease, start at the outside and work your way in using small circular motions. Then apply a powder eye shadow over using the same technique. Apply a light colour eye shadow directly underneath your eyebrow.

Use a white eye-liner on your waterline this will brighten your eyes.

Line your upper eye lid with a darker colour for a more definitive look

At this stage if you like you can add false lashes to your bottom lashes as these will me more visible when you have your glasses on and it will give a more dramatic look. Curl your top lashes and apply mascara. Using a water proof mascara is better as it flakes less.

Suck in your cheeks and apply a blusher to the sunken part of your cheeks sweeping backward towards your hairline.

Depending on your mood you can use a pale or nude colour lip stick. If your would prefer to take the focus off your glasses then use a strong deep colour.

So there you have it, a step by step guide to applying your make-up for a flawless look while wearing your specs!
